Good morning from Indianapolis, New York Giants fans!
In case you missed it, and if you did I need an explanation, you can hear GM Dave Gettleman and head coach Joe Judge from the NFL Scouting Combine on the latest ‘Valentine’s Views’ podcast.
Now, on to more of your morning headlines.
NFL Draft: Giants fire two longtime scouts in Gettleman shakeup | New York Post
As part of the continued overhaul of the entire football operation he started two years ago, general manager Dave Gettleman has fired two longtime Giants area scouts, The Post confirmed.
Gettlemen let go of Ryan Jones, who was with the Giants for 20 years, and Donnie Etheridge, who was with the team for the past 19 years.
Jones worked the northeast region and Etheridge worked with the southwest region, assignments given to them in 2018 when Gettleman took over.
NFL Combine buzz: Giants, Gettleman hold keys to the draft | USA Today
What I'm Hearing: While there was plenty of chatter about the potential landing spots for Tom Brady and Philip Rivers, it was Giants GM Dave Gettleman's remarks about the New York's first round pick that got the most buzz.
What Joe Judge's peculiar no-naming Giants rule really means | New York Post
The real reason why Matt Rhule spurned Giants for Panthers | New York Post
A source familiar with Rhule’s thinking told The Post that the Panthers’ show of commitment — flying to meet him and family in Texas as soon as he arrived home from a Mexico vacation rather than waiting for him to visit their facility, and offering a seven-year contract that will allow the patience to make wholesale operational changes — made the difference.
Odell Beckham trade déjà vu pops up at NFL Combine | New York Post
Yes, Giants fans, you’ve been there.
In the Odell Beckham playbook, this one is called “We didn’t sign him to trade him.”
Those seven words were uttered by Giants general manager Dave Gettleman at the 2019 NFL Combine, two weeks before he shipped Beckham to the Browns. So, it is understandable if a skeptical Beckham heard his team’s new general manager Andrew Berry speak Tuesday and started packing his bags.
In one breath: “We view him as part of our future. We’re excited about the future with Odell, excited about what he’s going to do this fall.”
In another, when asked specifically in a smaller pack of media about Beckham’s availability if an inquiring trade partner calls: “It’s something that you always pick up the phone and you listen to anything across the table.”
NFL source details why Giants should brace for a fight if they tag Leonard Williams | SNY
Dave Gettleman admitted the Giants are "discussing" the possibility of using the franchise tag Leonard Williams.
If they do, they also better be bracing for a fight.
If the Giants do franchise Williams in the next few weeks, they are expected to tag him as a defensive tackle. And if they do, Williams' camp will likely file a grievance claiming he should be tagged as a defensive end, according to an NFL source. Williams played both positions with the Giants and Jets last season, but being tagged as an end could earn him approximately $2 million more.
Combine coverage
In case you missed any of our Combine coverage on Tuesday, here it is.
Joseph Czikk details the friendly competition between these two. “ ... there are a lot of great receivers in this class. To say that we’re the headlines of this receiving group, it’s a huge honor,” Lamb said.
“Absolutely. We’re open for business.”
That, of course, does not mean Gettleman will trade out of that fourth slot.
“Whatever we do is going to be in our best interests,” Gettleman said. “Trading back has danger. We’re at 4, what happens if we trade back to 8, there’s only four players that we like. What if they’re all gone? Now what are you going to do, trade back again? You can trade yourself back out of good players.
“You gotta be careful of trading too far back.”
“Every one of our players are going to come here with a blank slate and be able to compete from the ground up from Day 1 and I’m not going to establish any kind of status or hierarchy within the individual players or position groups by spending a month talking about individuals,” Judge said. “That’s important to me. I want you guys to understand my reason for that. I can’t tell everyone they’ve got an equal slate and they show up on April 7th and I’ve spent a month talking about a specific player. Okay? Everyone’s got the same opportunity on a daily basis to compete.”
Joe Burrow has tiny hands. OMG!
Tight ends Josiah Deguara, Charlie Taumoepeau didn’t feel slighted by being 8 a.m. warmup acts for the carnival that NFL Scouting Combine media sessions really are.
“To be honest I’m completely used to this,” said Taumopeau. “I’ve become accustomed to this throughout my career. I went to a small school, Portland State. I’m just happy to be here. I’m enjoying the experience. At the Senior Bowl it was kinda the same deal, they woke us at 5, 6 a.m. and worked us until about 10, 11 p.m. at night so I’m definitely used to it and our training gets us prepared.”
