Competing objectives--meeting the media.

Gettleman and Judge are meeting the media, and they have different objectives.

The media will be trying to pry as much as possible out of G&J. Some will be asking honest questions for information. Others will be basically baiting G&J in an attempt to make a headline or to trip up G or J into saying something stupid. The media doesn't want vanilla; they want something new and newsworthy. Some in the media act as if they have a divine right to your innermost secrets! The media knows that Gettleman has a history of running his mouth to prove he's the smartest guy in the room, and they will do their best to help G shoot himself in the foot! This will be fun to watch!

On the other hand G&J will be trying to tell the media as little important stuff as possible while at the same time keeping them happy. The Giants are entering the time of the year (FA and the Draft) where they are developing a strategy and will be competing with 31 other teams for limited resources. G&J would be fools to share their strategy with the media--and the other teams. They would be fools to badmouth any of their current players or to reveal their FA or draft strategy. Yet this is exactly what the media wants to find out! G&J have to remember a basic negotiating strategy--keep your mouth shut--let the other guy expose himself in public!

So, what do I want? I'd like to see a good dose of humble pie from Gettleman. I'd also like to see the famous NY media give Judge somewhat of a pass since he's the new guy in their sights. Who knows, maybe Judge will be wildly successful. Do you really want to be the guy who pissed him off at the start?
