Report: Giants hire Amos Jones, waive TEs Scott Simonson and Isaiah Searight

The Giants hire the former special teams coordinator for an unspecified coaching role

Cleveland Browns v Baltimore Ravens

Monday has turned into something of an active news day for the New York Giants as Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News is reporting that the Giants have hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant special teams coordinator Amos Jones.

Jones was on the Mississippi State staff as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach when new Giants’ head coach Joe Judge joined the Bulldog’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant. Jones is a long-time special teams coach, having been the special teams coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals, and Cleveland Browns before joining the Buccaneers’ staff last year.

Jones’ role is being described as a “special assistant” and being involved in game management rather than as a position coach. What, exactly, that entails remains to be seen, but the Giants’ already extensive coaching staff seems to have grown again.

Meanwhile, Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Giants have waived tight ends Scott Simonson and Isaiah Searight. Simonson came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent signed by the Oakland Raiders in 2014. The Giants originally signed Simonson in June of 2018, and he appeared in 21 games (starting 5) for the Giants over the last two seasons. Simonson has 11 of his 12 receptions and his only NFL touchdown as a Giant.

The Giants signed Searight after he was released by the Buccaneers in the summer of 2019. Searight spent the 2019 season on the Giants’ injured reserved after suffering a hamstring injury early in training camp.
