NFC East standings: The Giants still have a chance

A New York win and Washington loss in Week 17 would send the Giants to the postseason

After the New York Giants’ 27-13 blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens Sunday afternoon, all eyes turned to the Washington Football Team’s game against the 4-10 Carolina Panthers and the division-rival matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys.

If Washington won or the Eagles won, the Giants would have been eliminated from playoff contention. But luck was at least partially on New York’s side as both the Football Team and Eagles lost Sunday afternoon.

Updated division standings:

Washington Football Team (6-9)

Dallas Cowboys (6-9)

New York Giants (5-10)

Philadelphia Eagles (4-10-1)

The Giants host the Cowboys next week at MetLife Stadium. Washington will be the visitor in Philadelphia.

Because of the losses by Washington and Philadelphia this week, there are now three potential playoff scenarios in the NFC East:

  1. Washington will clinch the division if it defeats the Eagles.
  2. If the Football Team loses and the Cowboys defeat the Giants, the Cowboys will clinch.
  3. If the Football Team loses and the Giants defeat the Cowboys, the Giants will clinch.

Next week, the Giants will look to defeat a hot Cowboys team that has won three straight. And they will hope that Washington closes out the season with what would be its third straight loss.

If the Giants manage to win and the Football Team loses, New York would clinch its first postseason berth since 2016.
