The New York Giants on Tuesday signed veteran guard Kenny Wiggins to the active roster. Wiggins takes the spot vacated when starting guard Will Hernandez was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.
Hernandez missed Monday night’s game agains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is also expected to miss Sunday’s game against the Washington Football Team.
The Giants also returned defensive back Montre Hartage, running back Alfred Morris and offensive lineman Chad Slade to the practice squad.
Wiggins, 32, is in his eighth NFL season. He spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons, as well as four games this season, with the Detroit Lions before being cut. Wiggins has also played for the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego/LA Chargers. Wiggins has played in 79 NFL games, starting 38.
Tuesday is the NFL trade deadline. There remains speculation that the Giants could trade veteran guard Kevin Zeitler. The play of Shane Lemieux in his debut, the eventual return of Hernandez and the signing of Wiggins might give the Giants the flexibility to do that.
