Giants waive Corey Ballentine, activate Will Hernandez and Dante Pettis

Second-year cornerback had lost playing time on defense, and role as kickoff returner

The New York Giants announced Tuesday night that they waived CB Corey Ballentine.

The Giants originally drafted Ballentine out of Washburn university in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He was a primary kick returner for the Giants in his rookie season. Ballentine began the season as the Giants’ starting cornerback opposite James Bradberry after DeAndre Baker was removed from the team and Sam Beal opted out of the 2020 season. He dropped down the depth chart after a rough start to the season and the acquisition of CBs Isaac Yiadom and Ryan Lewis.

Ballentine has mostly played special teams over the last few weeks, contributing as a kick returner and coverage player.

The Giants waived Ballentine as a corresponding roster move as they activate starting left guard Will Hernandez from the reserve/COVID-19 list. The Giants have also activated wide receiver Dante Pettis, who they claimed off of waivers from the San Francisco 49ers last week.
