Good morning, New York Giants fans!
Giants’ coaching search
Former NFL executive Michael Lombardi writes for The Athletic [subscription only] that Mike McCarthy might be the best candidate for the Giants’ head-coaching vacancy:
He has worked in an organization that limits the influence of the coach in terms of personnel decisions so he will understand the dynamics of the Giants’ front office. The system of offense won’t change much for rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, as McCarthy wants to run a version of the West Coast offense. McCarthy would give the Giants toughness, leadership and someone who can develop the quarterback.
Paul Schwartz of the New York Post details the issues involved in a McCarthy hiring by the Giants. One of those is how a coach who has never really featured the running game would use Saquon Barkley.
Here is John Clayton talking to the New York Post about the Giants’ decision to keep GM Dave Gettleman:
You see the change in general managers at a higher pace. They are looking at it like he got the quarterback and some good young players. I could understand it if they would have fired him because the team won four games. You could see there’s not friction, but the ownership groups are not on the same page. Sometimes it’s better to wait it out and see if in another year you want to make the change. But now you have to make the case that the owners are making the decision on the coach, not necessarily Gettleman.
Ralph Vacchiano says Matt Rhule remains “the one the Giants want the most” in their search for a new coach.
Giants’ attendance drops
Attendance for Giants’ games at MetLife Stadium dropped 3.0 percent in 2019 as the Giants went a miserable 4-12. As bad as that was, Sports Business Daily reported recently that six NFL teams had bigger attendance drops. The Jacksonville Jaguars (-8.7 percent) had the biggest decrease. League-wide, attendance (66,648 customers per game) was at its lowest since 2004.
Where will Pat Shurmur land?
Depending on how the head-coaching carousel spins, the ex-Giants head coach could land as offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs or even back at his old job with the Minnesota Vikings, per the NY Post. He could also end up working with Eric Biemiemy if Bieniemy gets a head-coaching job.
