Matt Rhule’s Mexico vacation is apparently almost over. Perhaps the New York Giants coaching search is as well.
Ian Rapoport is reporting that Rhule, believed to be the top candidate on the Giants’ list as they seek their next head coach, will interview with the Giants next week, probably on Tuesday.
That, of course, is if Rhule gets out of Carolina. Rhule is interviewing for the Panthers’ vacancy on Monday.
The Baylor coach, an assistant offensive line coach on Tom Coughlin’s Giants staff in 2012, is believed to covet the Giants’ job above all others.
Rhule, 44, is a New York native who has rebuilt college programs at Temple and Baylor.
While the development of Daniel Jones is of paramount importance, the Giants are believed to be looking for a leader above all else.
Before Pat Shurmur had even been let go, indications given to me were that Rhule would be the top choice of co-owners Steve Tisch and John Mara in any coaching search.
Looks like we will find out soon enough if Rhule and the Giants believe they are a match.
The Giants have interviewed Kris Richard, Mike McCarthy, Eric Bieniemy and are interviewing Don Martindale Saturday evening.
