The Giants and Kitchens have been linked together for some time. The team was initially reported to have interviewed Kitchens for their offensive coordinator position back on Jan. 9, only to hire Jason Garrett. It was then reported on the 21st that Kitchens would be joining the Giants’ staff, but in what capacity was unknown. That report received some push-back and it was reported that Kitchens “wasn’t a lock” to join the Giants’ staff.
Now it seems to be a lock, and we now know his role.
Kitchens previously worked with head coach Joe Judge when the two were on the staff at Mississippi State. Kitchens was a tight ends coach at Mississippi State in 2004 while Judge was a graduate assistant. Kitchens became a coach in the NFL as a tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys in 2006 and Arizona Cardinals in 2007.
(Notably, Kitchens’ time in Dallas does not overlap with Jason Garrett’s, who joined the Dallas coaching staff as offensive coordinator in 2007.)
Kitchens becomes the fourth former head coach to join the Giants’ coaching staff, along with Garrett and Derek Dooley on the offensive side of the ball and Bret Bielema on the defense.
