A familiar pattern of connections via the New England Patriots is beginning to emerge with the reported hires for head coach Joe Judge’s staff with the New York Giants.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network is reporting that Jerry Schuplinski, former assistant quarterbacks coach with the Patriots and Miami Dolphins, will become the quarterbacks coach for the Giants. The other reprted hire from outside the Giants is Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator, who also followed the Patriots-Dolphins route.

Schuplinski will thus be placed in the key role of working daily with Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, the player the team drafted No. 6 overall in 2019.

Schuplinski began his NFL coaching career as a coaching assistant with the Patriots in 2013. He was promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2016, and held that role until moving to the Miami Dolphins last season in the same capacity.

Prior to New England, Schuplinski spent six seasons (2007-12) as the linebackers and special teams coach at Case Western Reserve.

In addition to Tom Brady, Schuplinski worked with Jacoby Brissett and Jimmy Garoppoli in New England.

“I can’t even tell you how many conversations I had with Jerry just man-to-man, him helping me out and getting me acclimated to the NFL life,” Garoppolo said “I really thank him for that. I probably wouldn’t be where I am at without him.”

“He was a great mentor for me,” Brissett added. “That was on and off the field. He was someone I always leaned on and just talked about anything. We would talk about life, family — things away from football that made our relationship so special.”

This next quote comes form former Dolphins offensive coordinator Chad O’Shea.

“Obviously, I have a lot of familiarity with Jerry Schuplinski. He did a great job for us at New England, and we were very fortunate to have him here with us working,” O’Shea said. “He’s a great communicator. He’s got a great personality to work with a position. He’s got a tremendous knowledge of our system, which is very important. He’s someone that I really trust, and I really lean on for his expertise and his ability to communicate with the quarterbacks. We’re very fortunate to have Jerry here on staff.”

Schuplinski is one of the assistant coaches who was expected to join Josh McDaniels with the Indianapolis Colts for for the 2018 season before McDaniels backed out of accepting that job.

Reported hirings for the Giants’ coaching staff now include Graham (defensive coordinator, Thomas McGaughey (special teams coordinator), Tyke Tolbert (wide receivers).
