Kareem Martin will be out weeks for the New York Giants with a knee sprain suffered Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Pat Shurmur said on Wednesday. Shurmur also confirmed that wide receiver Sterling Shepard is in the concussion protocol.
Martin, 27, is in his sixth season. He played all 16 games for the Giants a year ago with seven starts, compiling 1.5 sacks and 48 tackles. Without Martin, rookie third-round pick Oshane Ximines could see more action. Perhaps there will also be immediate snaps for EDGE Tuzar Skipper, claimed this week on waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Shepard’s concussion means the Giants could be without both of their starting wide receivers on Sunday vs. the Buffalo Bills. Golden Tate, of course, is serving his four-game suspension.
Per reporters on hand Wednesday, Shepard was outside during the early portion of practice [the only part media is allowed to watch] doing some light running. So, that is perhaps an optimistic sign.
Shepard may well have suffered his concussion on this third quarter play:
I'd wager this is when Shepard suffered the concussion. Midway through the third quarter he goes helmet-to-helmet on a block and wobbled to the ground. I noted at the time that he was shaken up, but he stayed in so I thought nothing of it pic.twitter.com/SvsytY5Hf8

As Duggan and others have noted, pretty amazing that neither the NFL concussion spotters nor anyone on the sideline noticed Shepard’s distress.
