College football week one - Games and players to watch on the first full Saturday

Who and what to watch in today’s slate of college games

NCAA Football: College Football Playoff National Championship-Clemson vs Alabama Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning New York Giants fans and a happy Saturday to all!

The NFL preseason is in the books and all 32 teams will be trimming their rosters from 90 to 53 over the course of the day. But that’s not what we’re here for, because today marks the first full Saturday of the 2019 college football season.

This weekend of games already got started on Thursday night while we were watching the final NFL preseason games.

How will today’s games measure up?

Ohio State (5) vs. Florida Atlantic

Fox - noon (est)

All due respect to FAU, this game is about Ohio State and the start of the Ryan Day era following the departure of Urban Meyer. Ohio State maintains a stacked roster with future NFL players throughout the offense and defense — a good situation for any new coach. That also means that they are a regular “must watch” as we start to lay the groundwork for our 2020 draft prep.

Players to watch

  • Harrison Bryant (TE)

Ohio State

  • Chase Young (EDGE)
  • Jeffery Okudah (CB)
  • J.K. Dobbins (RB)
  • K.J. Hill (WR)

Alabama (2) vs. Duke

ABC - 3:30pm (est)

For the first time in what seems like forever, Alabama is not the top ranked team in the nation as the season opens. That honor belongs to Clemson, the reigning national champions. They had a statement game against Georgia Tech Thursday night that saw the Tigers win 52-14 on the strength of an absurd 12 carry, 205 yard, 3 touchdown performance by RB Travis Etienne.

Will Alabama to make a statement of their own against Duke?

Unfortunately, Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses was injured just before the start of the season. He was considered one of the top linebackers in the country.

Players to watch

  • Deon Jackson (RB)

  • Tua Tagovailoa (QB)
  • Jerry Jeudy (WR)
  • Henry Ruggs III (WR)
  • Raekwon Davis (iDL)
  • Xavier McKinney (S)
  • Trevon Diggs (CB)

Auburn (16) vs. Oregon (11)

ABC - 7:30pm (est)

If you are going to watch one game this weekend, make it this one. While other teams might be starting with tune-up games, these two programs elected to go for a marquee match-up (likely in the hopes of impressing the College Football Playoff selection committee later in the season). These two teams are deep and talented, each featuring players who will be playing on Sundays after hearing their name called in the spring of 2020.

All eyes will be on Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert, who was widely considered the top QB in the 2019 draft before deciding to return to school for his senior year. But keep an eye on the opposing defensive line as iDL Derrick Brown is a disruptive force.

Players to watch

  • Derrick Brown (iDL)
  • Nick Coe (EDGE)
  • Prince Tega Wanogho (OT)
  • Jack Driscoll (OT)

  • Justin Herbert (QB)
  • Jake Hanson (iOL)
  • Troy Dye (LB)
  • Jordon Scott (iDL)
