College football is back! Florida vs. Miami

College football has officially returned

NCAA Football: Florida Spring Game Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a while since I’ve said this ... Happy Saturday New York Giants fans!

We’ve finally made it to regular season football. No, not NFL football — that’s still a week away — but college football gets started tonight when the Florida Gators host the Miami Hurricanes.

Ordinarily I would point out some games from the day’s schedule that I am particularly interested in, but today we just have one game:

Miami at Florida

ESPN - 7 p.m.

Last year Miami was expected to take a step forward and build on the excitement of their 2017 campaign. But while they were still a fun team to watch, they weren’t able to take that next step, challenge Clemson in the ACC and potentially put themselves in the conversation for a major bowl game. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way and while The U still brings the swagger they regained in 2017, they have some work to do.

Florida is still looking to recapture the glory (and dominance) they enjoyed a decade ago under Urban Meyer. They enter the season ranked eighth in the nation, the fourth highest ranked SEC team behind Alabama (2), Georgia (3), and LSU (6). Florida always has talent on their roster and they have a few draft eligible players who could expect to be selected early in the 2020 draft.

Despite being in the same state and rival programs, the two teams haven’t played each other since 2013.

Players to watch

Miami
Trevon Hill (EDGE)
Shaquille Quarterman (LB)
Michael Pinckney (LB)
K.J. Osborn (WR)

Florida
C.J. Henderson (CB)
Jabari Zuniga (EDGE)
Lamical Perine (RB)

We’ll be back next week with the first full slate of games — and probably before then with an early watch list for the top prospects at each position. But until then, have fun and enjoy actual football that matters!
