Count Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield as a critic of the New York Giants’ decision to make Duke quarterback Daniel Jones the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

“I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones,” Mayfield says in an interview with GQ. “Blows my mind.”

Mayfield added this, probably in reference to Jones having played at a school that wasn’t a national powerhouse:

“Some people overthink it [what makes a good quarterback]. That’s where they go wrong. They forget you’ve gotta win.”

This isn’t the first time Mayfield has taken a swipe at the Giants. Talking about new teammate Odell Beckham Jr., the former Giant who has taken his own swipes at his old team, Mayfield said this a few weeks ago:

“He’s [Beckham] here to work, and he wants to be surrounded by people who love him and support him and allow him to be himself,” Mayfield said. “He’s here to play in front of fans who actually care, who will actually show up to every game and pack the stadium and love him for who he is.”

Beckham is also taking new shots at the Giants.

Sadly, with all the back-and-forth, the Giants and Browns don’t play each other this season. They are set to play next season at MetLife Stadium, a game that certainly should draw some interest.

Mayfield has now attempted to clarify his remarks to GQ.
