Eli Manning threw four completions on four attempts including an 8-yard touchdown strike Friday night against the Chicago Bears.
Manning’s scoring pass went to Bennie Fowler. The other three passes on the drive went to Cody Latimer (20 yards), Rhett Ellison (9 yards) and Golden Tate (5 yards).
“The offensive line did a great job allowing me to get through my progression and get to my second guy,” Manning said of the game-opening play. “It was a good way to start the game with an explosive play. We did a good job. We ran the ball well ... We finally had a third down in the red zone. They came out with an all-out blitz, and we hit Cody (Latimer) with a little underneath route.
The drive finished with the touchdown throw over the middle to Fowler.
“It was a good way to finish that drive,” Manning said.
Manning was asked whether his distribution to three different receivers on the scoring drive was a sign of things to come throughout the regular season.
“Yeah, I think so. We have a lot of guys who have been working hard, who were here last year and have played well for us,” Manning said. “When we get Saquon (Barkley) in there, we’ll have him. We have a lot of guys that we have great confidence in that can get open. We’ll spread it around and just throw it to the open guy.”
Coach Pat Shurmur said Manning changed at least one play during the drive.
“He really played quarterback well during that drive,” Shurmur said. “He got us in the end zone.”
Daniel Jones took over on the second Giants drive. He was nearly as impressive as his first game action against the Jets last week, this time going 11-for-14 for 161 yards and a 15-yard passing touchdown to former Detroit Lions receiver TJ Jones. Jones did, however, fumble twice.
