The big news of the day Sunday for the New York Giants was rookie cornerback DeAndre Baker leaving practice during warm-ups and needing an MRI on his knee. Here is more of what happened as the Giants returned to work for the final few days of what will be considered the training camp portion of the preseason.

Eli Manning “throwing the ball better”
Manning played only three plays vs. the New York Jets, and drew criticism for his decision-making on the one throw he did make. Manning apparently had an excellent practice Sunday, a continuation of what he has done most of the summer.
“I thought he did a great job. I think he’s practiced well throughout (training camp),” Shurmur said. “Now, after I’ve watched him (during) this three-week stretch, I think he’s throwing the ball better than he did last summer. He’s got a real good grasp of what we want to do offensively. He had another good day out there.”
Practice nuggets:

— Manning threw a TON. Went 18-of-23 and hit several passes downfield, including one to Saquon Barkley (see next tweet). Eli completed first 10 passes. Best day of his summer.

Nick Gates gains value
Offensive lineman Nick Gates, trying to make the 53-man roster, had a rough go at left tackle vs. the Jets with two holding penalties and a false start. The fact that Gates could bump out to tackle, though, after playing guard in each of the last two training camps, impressed Shurmur.
“Obviously, he had the two holding calls. Those of us that watched, there were a lot of holds called all weekend. I don’t know if it was obvious, so maybe that was a theme. And he had the false start,” Shurmur said. “But I think for the most part, he did a really nice job out there. Yeah, him being able to do that certainly creates more value for him.”
