Good morning, New York Giants fans!
Practice No. 3 of Giants training camp is set for Saturday at 2:45 p.m. ET. If you’re headed out to the facility, you’re in luck. It’s a gorgeous day in East Rutherford, N.J. and the Giants are expected to be in full pads for the first time.
Golden Tate: Eli Manning “has a lot of juice left in the tank”
Tate, signed by the Giants this offseason, has played with quarterbacks Matthew Stafford, Russell Wilson, Carson Wentz and Nick Foles. He’s enjoying working with Manning.
“As a guy who has majored in the slot, I love veteran quarterbacks because there are a lot of bodies in the middle of the field,” Tate said. “Veteran quarterbacks typically can read the fields pretty well and save you guys from having to come to my funeral, so that’s a good thing. But to take it a step further, Eli is a Hall of Fame type of guy. Just being out here since April I think he has a lot of juice in the tank. I think he’s slinging the ball very, very well. Obviously, his knowledge is through the roof. I am excited to be out there with him. I can’t wait to get out there against an opponent and see what’s going to happen. It’s been my pleasure to play with them. I’ve had a bunch of good quarterbacks in my career, and that’s definitely a blessing.”
Manning, for what it’s worth, has thrown the ball well in the first two practices of training camp.
Darius Slayton itching to get back
Slayton’s impressive spring, with coach Pat Shurmur referring to him as the team’s most improved player during the offseason practices, raised expectations for the fifth-round pick. With so many other wide receivers having been injured in the first few days, Slayton’s hamstring injury is ill-timed.
Slayton, once he returns, hopes to pick up where he left off.
“I can bring some team speed to the offense, and the ability to make plays with the ball in open space,” Slayton said on Friday. “Hopefully, once I get back from injury and back to practice, I can get back into the swing of things. Throughout preseason, kind of get a feel for games and how it is competing against other teams in the NFL. Just have a positive impact this year.
Lorenzo Carter on the high expectations
The second-year edge player had another good day on Friday, highlighted by beating Nate Solder for what would have been a sack of Eli Manning. Carter, up to 256 pounds this year from playing in the low 240s a year ago, is often called a breakout candidate when various media outlets — including this one — put together those lists.
“I’ve always put big expectations on myself,” Carter said. “Coming to New York I knew reading the media wasn’t going to be the smartest thing to do. I try to stay away from it, but if that’s what they say then go ahead and watch, just watch and see.”
Asked about the possibility of getting double-digit sacks, Carter said “I’m more worried about winning games than getting double-digit sacks. I want double-digit wins.”
