Good morning, New York Giants fans!
Barkley: “MVP, MVP”
Fans at training camp Thursday chanted “MVP” at Saquon Barkley when Giants running backs did drills near the bleachers early in practice.
“That’s a first,” Barkley said after practice. “I have never really heard that chant before.”
Barkley won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award for his work in 2018. Could he add the MVP hardware to his trophy case after this season?
“I think anything is possible,” he said. “I am a big believer in that, but my mindset is not just that trophy. Obviously, I am not going to sit here and say ‘I don’t want to win the MVP,’ or ‘I don’t want to win this or win that.’ But I am a big believer. I take care of the little things and focus on (the) team first. It’s a team-first mentality and all of the individual awards will take care of themselves.”
Coach Pat Shurmur said Barkley has “a generational spirit” and that he “leads by example.” After 352 touches (261 rushes, 91 receptions) last season, Shurmur was asked about Barkley’s potential 2019 workload.
“We’ll see what it takes to win football games,” Shurmur said. “Certainly, we’ll want to try to do the best thing. I think we’ll all agree, it makes sense for him to touch the ball. As we go along, we also need to spread the ball around, whether we’re throwing it to him or handing it to him, subbing him (out) at times. We did sub him (out) last year at times, and we’ll continue to do that.
“We try to be smart with it and do everything we possibly can to win games. But player safety is important as well.”
Eli’s response to Odell
I’m sorry for belaboring this, but the response by Eli Manning to Odell Beckham Jr. saying he was “a main reason at keeping that brand alive” was too good to ignore.
Eli on OBJ's comments that he was reason why Giants were in prime time often: "I don't think they bothered me. You just kind of shake your head and laugh. ... I won a few games before he was here."

Classic Manning.
Kurt Warner: Daniel Jones “so much like Eli”
That was Warner’s reaction while watching Jones speak to reporters on Thursday.
“It’s amazing,” Warner said after Jones’ news conference had concluded. “Even some of the phrases he uses remind you of Eli (Manning). You talk about what you see on film and some of their mannerisms as players, but it’s crazy. You hear them talk and it’s like ‘Oh my gosh!’ These guys are like the same guy, it’s just Eli 15 years younger. It is fascinating. But again, not a bad guy to model yourself after, from a lot of different standpoints.”
