DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES

Much has been written about the Giants' puny record for the past several years. But, really, has there been a defining moment? No, some of us were still basking in Super Bowl glory; this just sort of just crept up on us until we all realized (management, apparently, included) that the bottom had dropped out.

When did you realize the awesome size of the problem?

Compare this to the problem in the late 1960's. I know exactly when the bottom totally and completely dropped out for the Giants. A good friend (Jets season ticket holder) invited me to the completely sold-out pre-season Jets/Giants game at the Yale Bowl. That game could not have been more lopsided. The Giants received a 100 percent, total butt-whipping by the Jets. The G's looked totally helpless, and the Jets really poured it on. The Jets fans went totally ape-sh## wild, and us Giants fans were lucky to leave in one piece. The game ended the Jets feeling of being New York stepchildren, and the Giants finally had to take off their hats to the Jets. Man ,was that bitter!
