Giants’ 90-man roster: Brian Mihalik in fight to remain on roster

Who will be the No. 3 tackle for the New York Giants behind Nate Solder and presumptive starting right tackle Mike Remmers? One of the options is journeyman Brian Mihalik, who played a little for the Giants at the end of the 2018 season.

Let’s focus on Mihalik as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

How he got here

Mihalik was a seventh-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. Before joining the Giants last season, he had been with the Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions, and had played in two games with Detroit in 2017.

Mihalik played in five games for the Giants last season, totaling 52 snaps. Mihalik did not play enough snaps to qualify for PFF’s tackle listings, but in those 52 snaps he had a 39.7 score. For what it’s worth, that would have been worst in the NFL among scored tackles.

2019 outlook

With Nate Solder sidelined by ankle surgery during spring practices, Mihalik lined up as the first-team left tackle. Solder, thank goodness, is expected to be fine and should be available for training camp.

Mihalik? He is probably in competition with Chad Wheeler to be the team’s swing tackle off the bench, with Wheeler well ahead of him. Seventh-round pick George Asafo-Adjei and perhaps even undrafted free agent tackle Paul Adams could end up with better chances to make the tean than Mihalik.

So, I guess I’m saying my outlook for Mihalik is I would be surprised if he is part of the 2019 Giants.
