Giants’ 90-man roster: CB Janoris Jenkins can still play, but how long will he do it for Giants?

Janoris Jenkins is the old man when it comes to the New York Giants group of cornerbacks. Let’s assess Jackrabbit as we continue profiling the 90 players the Giants will be bringing to training camp this summer.

It’s amazing that he’s still here

I usually title this section of the profiles “How he got here.” For Jackrabbit, though, this seems more appropriate.

Jenkins was suspended for going AWOL in 2017 and had his on-field effort questioned. It seemed possible he would be one of the first players to go when GM Dave Gettleman began re-shaping the roster and trying to place an emphasis on an improved culture.

Jenkins, though, is still a Giant. And he’s now the veteran voice in the cornerback room.

2019 outlook

With all the untested players in the Giants’ secondary, Gettleman said that Jenkins has “puppies to train.”

Provided that he is healthy, I see no reason why Jenkins shouldn’t perform well in 2019. My question is whether or not he will finish the season with the Giants.

With all of the youth they have at cornerback it seems unlikely Jenkins and his $14.785 million cap hit will be part of the roster next season. Jenkins also is one of the team’s few remaining veteran trade chips, and should the Giants get off to a slow start you wonder if perhaps they would look to move Jenkins — allowing Sam Beal and DeAndre Baker to play full time — for some mid- to late-round draft capital.
