Keeping an eye on UDFAs

With all of this "downtime" to kill, it dawned on me that I could spend some of it looking at the players other teams release, especially UDFAs (who won't cost much money to bring in for a look). With that in mind, I made a list of some of the players I was surprised to see go undrafted, at positions that we have a need for. Here are some of the more intriguing ones:

1) Mitch Hyatt/LT/Clemson: I don't get it. He was a four-year starter on a 2-time National Champion at the most important O-line position, and...crickets! The man has given up 5 sacks in 4 years. Not EACH year...in total!

I really don't see how he went undrafted (especially by us!) Dallas has him now, but they are loaded at O-line, so I'm hoping he's an early cut. I think he's at least a practice squad player (a step up from Mihalik?) who could pay big dividends in a year or two. Solder won't play forever, and Hyatt has been Mr Reliable at LT for Clemson. Why not for us?

2) Emmanuel Hall/WR/Missouri: He's 6' 2", 201 lbs, and runs a 4.39 40. Came from a passing attack (Drew Lock's) and avg'd over 20 yds per catch for his career. Gee, I can't imagine us wanting someone like that. Oh wait, we TOOK someone like that. Darius Slayton. Who has the same 40 time, but: fewer catches, is slightly smaller (190 lbs), weaker (11 reps vs 15) and less explosive (40" vert vs 43"). Maybe Chicago will cut him?

3) Gary Johnson/ILB/Texas: 6' 0", 226 lbs, 4.43 40-time. A really fast ILB from a big program. Worth a look, no? I'm thinking he could be a strong safety, maybe even a free safety, if he doesn't work out at my new favorite term, "Slot LB."

Also worth a look if they get released?:

Curtis Bolton/ILB/Oklahoma: A one-year starter, but quite the athlete (4.59 40-time, 38" vert.), and a relentless motor. We need an ILB with those things, no?

Wyatt Ray/DE/Boston College: A bit of a late bloomer, but solid athlete who looks like a project with a high pass-rush upside in a year or two.

Donald Parham/TE/Stetson: Saw him at the Sr Bowl. 6' 8", rangy, raw. But the red zone potential seems pretty high (reminds me of Harold Carmichael for you old-schoolers).

Zedrick Woods/S/Ole Miss: Not only was he the fastest person at the Combine, he put up 19 reps on the bench! That's more than DE Chase Winovich, TE Jace Sternberger and RB Benny Snell did! So he's not just fast, he's chiseled. And we say we need a single-high FS-in-training? Hmmm...

What do you guys think? Anyone else we should keep an eye on?
