Increasingly, it appears that the New York Giants will pass on Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins if he is available with the sixth pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, kicking the can to the 17th pick, 37th pick or maybe even into 2020.
Skill position expert Matt Waldman of The Rookie Scouting Portfolio told us during a recent show that neither Haskins nor Drew Lock were good value at No. 6. In our latest episode, Emory Hunt of Football Gameplan calls him the “premier prospect” at quarterback and offers a strong rebuttal.
“He’s the top quarterback prospect in this draft and would have been the top quarterback prospect in last year’s draft,” Hunt said. “You look at what he does extremely well. Accuracy, anticipation, the timing is where it needs to be. ... He’s so great as a prospect he forced Urban Meyer (Ohio State head coach) to change the way he thinks about offense.
“ ... All I know is whoever gets Haskins is going to get a superstar at the position. ... I think if the Giants take Haskins it puts them in position to have success after Eli Manning hangs ‘em up.”
More thoughts from Hunt
- “If you’re sitting there at six and you do the dumb decision of not taking Dwayne Haskins if he sits on the board then I think you should attack that defensive line.” Hunt’s choice? Ed Oliver.
- Hunt said he “wouldn’t take a quarterback if it’s not Haskins or [Kyler] Murray.”
- At 17 he would take whoever the Giants see as the best cornerback.
- Alabama State offensive tackle Tytus Howard is a name to watch in the second round and “would fit in perfectly” with the Giants.
