Mock Draft Tracker: Opinion beginning to tilt away from Dwayne Haskins at No. 6 for Giants

Solving the riddle of what the New York Giants will do in the 2019 NFL Draft isn’t easy. The Giants talk — a lot — about wanting to get a successor in place to learn behind Eli Manning. Coach Pat Shurmur said Tuesday he would like that “sooner than later.” Yet, they also talk about assessing value, having other needs across the roster, and not reaching for a quarterback.

All of that leads to a growing belief that the Giants will not take a quarterback with their first pick in the draft, which is sixth overall. This line of thinking proffers the theory that the Giants could use their second first-round pick, 17th, or their second-round pick (37th) on a quarterback.

Mock drafts are perhaps beginning to reflect this. Our current mock draft tracker, showing 29 mocks updated since the Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns, shows 14 mocks giving the Giants Dwayne Haskins at No. 6. That’s 48.3 percent, down from 62 percent in our last tracker update, still a significant number but dipping under 50 percent for the first time since we started tracking mocks in this cycle.

The 17th pick is interesting. In our tracker, 19 different selections were made at No. 17 in our 29 mocks. Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, Oklahoma right tackle Cody Ford and Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell all were mocked to the Giants three times with that pick.

The complete tracker is below.
