Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Daniel Jones “disappointed”

Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones was in a somber mood on Monday as he spoke to media about the firing of Pat Shurmur as head coach.

“Just disappointed. Coach (Pat Shurmur) obviously believed in me, Coach believed in all of us, and it’s disappointing,” Jones said. “I’m grateful to him for the opportunity. I think he’s an excellent football coach and I really appreciate what he’s done for us.”

Shurmur, of course, was part of the decision-making process that led to the selection of Jones at No. 6 in the 2019 NFL Draft. Shurmur inserted him as the starter in Week 3.

Saquon Barkley: “Very hard” to hear the Shurmur news

The star running said of Shurmur’s firing that “it sucks.”

“That’s your coach. He’s one of the guys that believed in me, believed in DJ (Daniel Jones), for us to get here and live our dreams of playing in the NFL. You don’t want to see anybody go out like that,” Barkley said. “It sucks because, like I said, you point the finger at one person. It wasn’t all him, it’s all of us. We just need to take that and learn from the lesson, and in the future, to be better.”

This from Albert Breer is noteworthy:

I mentioned this on Twitter: the Giants have received feedback that some coaches would be lukewarm on the job based on what’s perceived as an old-school structure gone stale. The thinking there is that too many people have been in their jobs for 10, 20 or even 30 years, and that the organization needs a bit of a reset.

My understanding is that Baylor coach Matt Rhule is among those who feel that way. If he’s going to land back where he was assistant offensive line coach in 2012, there’ll have to be some changes in how things are set up.

Chandler played for Rhule at Temple.

“He makes you want to play for him because you know he’ll back you up each and every day,” Chandler said. “Coach Rhule, he’s definitely a lion at heart, so I feel like he’ll [succeed] wherever he goes.”
