[Updated] Giants’ injury news: TE Scott Simonson joins Rhett Ellison on the IR

The Giants are down to one healthy tight end

NFL: DEC 09 Giants at Eagles

The New York Giants have ruled RT Mike Remmers and tight ends Rhett Ellison and Scott Simonson out of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles with concussions. All three were held out of Friday’s practice as they continue through the concussion protocol.

The injury to Remmers means the start for Nick Gates who has filled in at both right tackle and right guard in recent weeks. He will have to prepare for a tall task against a very deep and very good Philadelphia Eagles pass rush.

The injury to Simonson and Ellison’s continued presence in the concussion protocol leaves UDFA rookie Kaden Smith as the Giants’ only active tight end. As of this writing we do not yet know if the Giants will make any personnel moves to give themselves depth at the position. But as it stands, they will be unable to run any personnel packages with multiple tight ends. This could also cause an increase the workload for fullback Elijhaa Penny if the Giants attempt to compensate by using more two-back sets.

Additionally, LB Alec Ogletree (back) and cornerbacks Corey Ballentine (back) and Sam Beal (shoulder) were limited participants in Friday’s practice and have been ruled as “questionable.”

The good news is that (as of this writing) cornerback DeAndre Bake and linebacker Lorenzo Carter are not listed as being limited after appearing on the injury report on Wednesday and Thursday.

Roster moves [Updated]

The first of what might be a trio of roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game has been made. The Giants announced that Ellison, who hasn’t played since Week 10 against the New York Jets, has been placed on injured reserve. The Giants have added defensive tackle Chris Slayton, a seventh-round pick who has spent the entire season on the practice squad, to the 53-man roster. Out of Syracuse, Slayton was the Giants’ final draft pick. He was selected 245th overall.

The Giants made their second roster move Saturday by moving Simonson to the injured reserve and promoting TE Garrett Dickerson from the practice squad. Dickerson was originally signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft, and has bounced back and forth between the active roster and practice squad since then.
