College Football Week 6 - Games and players to watch

Potential first round picks will be on display today

NCAA Football: Florida Atlantic at Ohio State Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

Happy Saturday New York Giants fans! And welcome to week six of the 2019 college football season.

The schedule makers have given us a solid slate of games this week, with matches between ranked opponents in both the noon and prime time slots (so of course we’ll be focusing on those). There is a nice selection of games in the afternoon (3:30 p.m.) slot, highlighted by the game between 7th ranked Auburn and 10th ranked Florida. That game should not only have implications for both the College Football Playoffs, but also the 2020 NFL Draft.

If that game interests you, go ahead and watch — you’ll definitely be watching future NFL players. But I wanted to get out of the SEC a bit and concentrate on some other match-ups.

Iowa (14) at Michigan (19)

Fox - Noon

We get to start our Saturday with a potentially great match-up between ranked opponents, one of which I’ve had tabbed to keep a consistent eye on.

I’ve you’ve been following along throughout the 2019 season, you should know that I mean the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa has two players who each should be high on the Giants’ radar for their first round pick in DL A.J. Epenesa and OT Tristan Wirfs. This week Iowa’s red-shirt junior left tackle Alaric Jackson is slated to make his return from injury, moving Wirfs from left tackle back to his natural position of right tackle.

Iowa will visit a Michigan team which is both formidable but has struggled against ranked opponents to date. There will be NFL players on all sides of the ball in this game, and potentially John Harbaugh’s future will be at stake as well.

Players To Watch

Iowa

  • A.J. Epenesa (DL)
  • Tristan Wirfs (OT)
  • Alaric Jackson (OT)
  • Nathan Stanley (WR)

Michigan

  • Ben Bredeson (iOL)
  • Donovan Peoples-Jones (WR)
  • Nico Collins (WR)
  • Joshua Uche (EDGE)

Texas (11) at West Virginia

ABC - 3:30 p.m.

Texas has quickly established itself as one of the better teams in the land and has played some fun football early in the season. Unfortunately, wide receiver Collin Johnson won’t be playing in this game, but safety Brandon Jones is a player to keep your eye on.

Players To Watch

Texas

  • Brandon Jones (S)
  • Zach Shackelford (OG)

West Virginia

  • Colton McKivitz (OT)
  • Kenny Robinson (S)
  • T.J. Simmons (WR)

Michigan State (25) at Ohio State (4)

ABC - 7:30 p.m.

We’ve got one of the classic Big 10 match-ups for our Prime Time game this week. Ohio State continues to be stacked with NFL talent as they move on from Urban Meyer, and could have a pair of defensive players drafted in the top-5 of the 2020 NFL Draft.

EDGE Chase Young leads the NCAA in sacks while CB Jeffery Okudah is being graded by some as the top corner in the upcoming draft. On the other side of the ball, Michigan State has the same kind of solid — if unspectacular — defense we have come to expect from Mark Dantonio.

Players To Watch

Michigan State

  • Kenny Willekes (EDGE)
  • Raequan Williams (DL)
  • Joe Bachie Jr. (LB)
  • Matt Allen (OC)
  • Darrell Stewart (WR)
  • Matt Seybert (TE)

  • Chase Young (EDGE)
  • Robert Landers (DL)
  • Jeffery Okudah (CB)
  • Shaun Wade (CB) *red-shirt sophomore
