Multiple sources are reporting that the New York Giants have traded with the New York Jets for defensive tackle Leonard Williams.

In exchange for Williams, the Giants are reportedly sending a 2020 third round pick and a 2021 fifth round pick to their cross-stadium rivals. This is the first time the Giants and Jets have ever executed a trade.

Williams is playing on his fifth-year option, so this is an 8-game tryout to see if the Giants want to sign him in free agency, as well as giving them the option to negotiate before Williams hits free agency.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jets will be paying most of Williams’ remaining salary, but if the Giants do sign Williams to a long-term extension, the 2021 fifth round pick will become a fourth round pick.

Rumors regarding the potential trade of Williams from the Jets to the Giants cropped up over the last twenty-four hours, and apparently there was substance to them. The Giants have been using free agent addition Olsen Pierre as their primary back-up at defensive end and three technique behind Dexter Lawrence and B.J. Hill.

Hill has also seen his defensive snap count drop over the last two weeks, playing just 19 snaps against the Arizona Cardinals and 29 snaps against the Detroit Lions.
