With the 2019 NFL trade deadline just a day away, there are published reports that the New York Giants are among the suitors for Leonard Williams, a defensive lineman and former sixth overall pick who the New York Jets are apparently seeking to unload.
A 25-year-old in his fifth season, the 6-foot-5, 302-pound Williams has been disappointing since a 68-tackle, seven-sack, two forced fumble 2016 season that saw him earn his only Pro Bowl nod.
Williams has just seven sacks since and has no sacks and just 20 tackles in seven games this season. The Jets have apparently told teams they have offers for Williams that include multiple draft picks.
The Giants are largely expected to be sellers at the deadline, but GM Dave Gettleman has continually said he wants to build a deep rotation of quality defensive linemen. At present, it does not appear that the Giants have that.
First-round pick Dexter Lawrence and third-year defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson have played well for the Giants so far in 2019. Second-year man B.J. Hill, a 2018 third-round pick, has been quiet with no sacks or quarterback hits and just 23 tackles in eight games.
Veteran Olsen Pierre is the only backup receiving significant snaps. RJ McIntosh, a 2028 fifth-round pick has apparently fallen out of favor and has played only nine total defensive snaps in the past three games combined.
What do you say, Giants fans? Would you be in favor of the Giants acquiring Williams?
