Needing depth at inside linebacker, the New York Giants arepromoting undrafted rookie Josiah Tauaefa from their practice squad. The Giants are also activating wide receiver Golden Tate, who is back from his four-game PED suspension.
The Giants are releasing wide receivers Bennie Fowler and T.J. Jones to make room on the 53-man roster.
Fowler, in his sixth NFL season, had 12 receptions in the first four games. Dropping him has to come as a surprise, as he has started a pair of games.
Jones muffed a pair of punts on Sunday and played only five offensive snaps, so his release is not surprising.
The Giants placed starting inside linebacker Ryan Connelly on season-ending injured reserve on Monday after he suffered a torn ACL. Alec Ogletree (hamstring) and Tae Davis (concussion) missed Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins and their statuses going forward remain uncertain.
Connelly and David Mayo started at linebacker. After Connelly was injured, Mayo and Nate Stupar were the only inside linebackers left.
Tauaefa led the Giants with 16 tackles in the preseason. He played collegiately at Texas-San Antonio.
The Giants are adding former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Devante Downs and wide receiver Da’Mari Scott to their practice squad. Scott was with the Giants during training camp before requesting his release to pursue what he hoped would be other opportunities.
