Mock draft roundup: Dwayne Haskins most popular pick for New York Giants

That, of course, is no surprise

NCAA Football: Rose Bowl Game-Ohio State vs Washington Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

It’s time to begin occasionally checking on the mock drafts predicting what could happen in the real 2019 NFL Draft. At this point, predictably, quarterback Dwayne Haskins is the consensus choice at No. 6 for the New York Giants.

Draft Site — Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State

Tankathon — Haskins

CBS Sports (Wilson) — Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama

In this scenario, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to No. 5 snag Haskins as their quarterback of the future. A scenario like this is one Giants fans who desperately want the team to pick Haskins should fear.

Of Williams, Wilson writes:

The Giants desperately need a quarterback but perhaps Jonah Williams will be for them what 2018 sixth-overall pick Quenton Nelson has been for the Colts this season. Namely: A redefining force on a bumbling offensive line desperate for some direction. Plus, if Eli Manning is coming back in ‘19 -- and it sure looks like he may be -- the Giants have to protect him.

SB Nation (Kadar) — Haskins

Kadar writes:

The Giants should take Haskins, they just might not be able to with the sixth overall pick. Although Eli Manning returning still seems like a toss-up, general manager Dave Gettleman was noncommittal on the quarterback.

Walter Football (Campbell) — Haskins

Campbell writes:

The Giants grab their replacement for Eli Manning.

Haskins (6-3, 220) flashes the ability to be a NFL quarterback, but he needs to become more consistent. In 2018, he completed 70 percent of his passes for 4,831 yards with 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He struggled as a pocket passer against Penn State, but dominated Michigan’s tough defense.

Haskins has a strong arm with the potential to be a pocket passer who hurts defenses. He has a lot of talent, but there have been stretches during which everything is just a little bit off with him. His decision-making is not consistent, and he makes some bad plays in terms of ball security. Haskins’ field vision needs to improve, and he has to get faster at working through his progressions. His footwork also needs improvement, and his ball placement can be off at times. At other times, however, he flashes the ability to make special throws with his arm strength and placement. Haskins should return to Ohio State for 2019 to improve his overall play before going to the NFL. As a first-year starter, that is understandable, and he has upside to grow.

Draft TekJosh Allen, OLB, Kentucky

The Giants will be really fortunate if Allen falls to No. 6.

Draft Network (Sikkema) — Drew Lock, QB, Missouri

In this draft, Sikkema has the Jaguars trading to No. 1 to get Haskins and the Giants moving up to No. 3 to get Lock.

Sikkema writes:

If Haskins does go No. 1, then that means any other team that might be remotely looking for a quarterback is likely going to start breathing heavily in and out of a brown paper bag. This year’s quarterback class is scarce, and if you don’t get one of the top three or four guys (and even then), you’re holding down the fort for another year.

For the Giants, I could see them being aggressive. They can say Eli is their guy for 2019 all they want, but general manager Dave Gettleman isn’t naive. He knows that a rookie’s first year with Eli next to him could mean a lot for a young passer’s learning curve, even if they don’t play in Year 1.

For the Giants to move up just three spots (mainly to jump Oakland), they would likely only have to give up a few Day 2 picks. Perhaps their second, fourth and fifth this year and a second next year — they have two extra fourth and fifth round picks this year.

Draft Scout (Rang) — Rashan Gary, DE, Michigan

In this scenario, the Giants pass on Haskins to select a hog mollie for the defense.

Rang writes:

I know that Giants fans are clamoring for a young quarterback, but I’m not sure that is in GM Dave Gettleman’s DNA to invest in the future when there will be gifted “hog mollies” on the board. Some scouts believe the 6-5, 280-pound Gary might just be the most gifted player in the entire draft.

Draft Wire (Easterling) — Haskins

It’s long past time for the Giants to replace Eli Manning, and barring another team trading ahead of them, they should have their pick of this year’s top passers. Haskins was my top QB prospect in this class even before Oregon’s Justin Herbert decided to return for his senior season, and he’s well worth this pick.
