Olivier Vernon replaces injured Khalil Mack in the Pro Bowl

The Giants will have a defender at the Pro Bowl after all

New York Giants EDGE Olivier Vernon has been added to the 2019 Pro Bowl. Vernon was voted as a first alternate and was added to the Pro Bowl when it was revealed that an injury suffered by Khalil Mack will keep him from playing in the game.

This is Vernon’s first Pro Bowl appearance in his sewven-year career and comes after a season in which Vernon amassed 30 tackles, 5 for a loss, 7.0 sacks, 21 QB hits, and a forced fumble over the course of 11 games.

Interestingly, Vernon’s 51.0 career sacks ranks just behind Mack’s 53.0 for 26th among active players. And while Vernon’s role hasn’t changed since the move from Steve Spagnuolo’s defense to James Bettcher’s, that he is now (technically) an outside linebacker makes him the first Giants’ linebacker to go to the Pro Bowl since Antonio Pierce in 2006.

Of course, hanging over all of this is the uncertainty regaring Vernon’s future with the Giants. Carrying a hefty cap hit, and questionable value for his price, the Giants could look to move on from him over the off-season.

But even if that happens, he will take the field as a Giant one more time.
