The New York Giants continued a widespread makeover of their secondary on Saturday afternoon with the news that Darian Thompson, who started 16 games at free safety last season, has been waived-injured.

Thompson was selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He played in only two games as a rookie due to a foot injury. He started all 16 games last season, but had only one interception. That was a disappointment after a play-making career at Boise State. Thompson also struggled with his tackling.
This summer he was thought to be in competition for the starting free safety job, but a lingering hamstring injury kept him off the field after the first preseason game. Curtis Riley has emerged as the winner of the free safety competition.
If Thompson goes unclaimed on the waiver wire he would revert back to the Giants injured reserve list.
The Giants also cut safety Andrew Adams and cornerbacks Leonard Johnson, Grant Haley and Chris Lewis-Harris on Saturday.
