Giants news, 8/7: Saquon feels “fine,” Eli Manning wants to play Thursday, more

Let’s get caught up on what’s happening with Big Blue

Good morning, New York Giants fans! With just two days before the Giants face the Cleveland Browns in their 2018 preseason opener, let’s get to the headlines.

Saquon Barkley: Pressing corner? No problem

Throughout camp, Barkley’s route-running has been fun to watch. Giants linebackers haven’t been able to cover him. A few days ago, we highlighted a play where cornerback Janoris Jenkins, couldn’t either. Barkley said Monday that he is comfortable no matter who is covering him.

“I really don’t blink about it. Offseason, that’s what I trained on. I kind of started working on that in college. When we had our team stuff, we’ll do one-on-ones and I would go against the DBs,” Barkley said. “I feel very comfortable with running routes against anybody. I think that’s where I can also help this offense by being able to be an all-around, every single-down back.”

Barkley’s practice reps were limited for a couple of recent practice. The rookie running back says fans shouldn’t be alarmed.

“Physically I feel fine,” he said. “Coaches, they have a game plan. They have an idea of what they want to do, and I’m just here just trying to follow that idea, and whatever reps they want me to take, I get in.”

Eli Manning wants to play Thursday

The past two years, Ben McAdoo held Manning out of the team’s preseason opener. Under Tom Coughlin, Manning had always seen action in that game. Pat Shurmur has yet to announce his plans for Thursday, but Manning wants to play.

“Whatever coach thinks we need. I think you want to be out there and playing just to get a feel for him calling the plays and the game plan,” Manning said. “I think once you’re playing against a new opponent, looks come up and different defenses that you’ve been seeing in training camp vs. your defense where you want to get some reps at those things to make sure everybody is on the same page. I’m excited about getting out there and playing.”

Simulating halftime

Shurmur has had the Giants practice a number of situations throughout camp. Monday, he actually had them practice halftime, giving them a 12-minute break inside the team’s practice bubble.

“We wanted to simulate a halftime,” Shurmur said. “It’s a pretty good hot day, so we simulated the halftime, much like you would in a game. We had a really physical first hour of practice, then we had a little, and then we came back for another physical hour. They were competitive in the early session, and they maintained their focus after the break.”

The longer Beckham goes without a contract extension from the Giants, the more they will have reason to consider getting something for him before he possibly walks next year in free agency.
