NFL: New York Giants at Detroit Lions Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants have their first lead of the preseason as they enter the second half against the Detroit Lions.

Head coach Pat Shurmur gave Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. the night off after a week of joint practices with the Lions. Davis Webb got the start, and the opportunity to redeem a terrible performance against the Cleveland Browns. Webb responded by carving the Lions starting defense up, to the tune of 14-for-20 (70 percent completion rate), for 140 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown drive went for 17 plays, including 7 first downs.

Jonathan Stewart got the start at the running back position with Saquon Barkley returning from a strained hamstring, but he was ineffective in his carries. Wayne Gallman, on the other hand, scored the touchdown, leading the team with 15 yards on four rushing attempts (3.8 yards per carry).

The Giants defense gave up more in the run game than in the first week, but appeared more buttoned down. They got consistent pressure, notching two sacks of Matthew Stafford, with a third called back for a curious penalty on Mark Herzlich. The big exception was a 42-yard catch and run for Theo Riddick with Alec Ogletree in coverage.

The Giants will get the ball to start the second half.
