When the New York Giants brought Dave Gettleman back to be their new general manager, it was understood that he would, eventually, be putting his own stamp on the front office.

Wednesday afternoon the Giants announced a variety of staff changes to the front office.

The Giants made a number of moves in their scouting department, mostly with respect to the regional scouting and football operations departments. However, there were several moves of note at the top of the front office:

  • Kevin Abrams, who served as interim GM after Jerry Reese was fired, is now the Vice President of Football Operations, in addition to being the Assistant General Manager. Abrams has been with the Giants since 1999 and has been the assistant GM for the last 16 years.
  • Mark Koncz is the new Director of Player Personnel. Koncz was brought on by Gettleman as a consultant after the two worked together with the Carolina Panthers. Koncz was Carolina’s Director of Pro Scouting from 2000-2017.
  • Chris Pettit has been promoted to Director of College Scouting after being an area scout for the Giants since 2005. The position was previously held by Marc Ross.

About the changes at the top of the front office, Gettleman said:

“We talk all the time about the importance of working together and communicating effectively and efficiently. These appointments and promotions are well deserved, and we feel like we are well-positioned to move forward with the group of people we have in player personnel and football operations. All are collaborators and communicators and understand the significance of self-improvement to make the organization the best it can be.”

Scouting department moves

Patrick Hanscomb will become a Mid-Atlantic region area scout after spending the past 10 years in pro personnel.

Marcus Cooper has been hired as an area scout focusing on the Southeast. Cooper spent the previous seven seasons with the Buffalo Bills, first as a player personnel assistant, then as an area scout, and last year as the team’s scout in the BLESTO Scouting Combine.

Beginning this season, each area scout will concentrate on a specific region. In addition to Hanscomb and Cooper, these are the scouts and their areas: D.J. Boisture (West), Jeremy Breit (Regional), Steve Devine (Midwest), Donnie Etheridge (Southwest), Ryan Jones (Northeast), Michael Murphy (West), Steve Verderosa (Regional) and Chris Watts (Midlands).

John (Jackie) Miles is the team’s new head equipment manager.
