Victor Cruz, who couldn’t make an NFL roster a season ago, is apparently still pining for a return to the NFL. Should the New York Giants, the team with which he starred for several seasons before injuries cut his career short, give him the chance?
From ESPN:
“I just love the game. I think I can still play,” Cruz said Tuesday at the BTIG Charity Day event in Manhattan, where he participated for his Victor Cruz Foundation. “I don’t want to exhaust all of that before I fall off.”
Cruz wouldn’t say when his final decision would come, but it’s expected to be this summer if there is no offer.
”Once that deadline comes, if nothing has happened, I’ll hang them up,” he said.
”Probably around training camp time and then we’ll go from there.”
Sentimentally, it might be nice to see the Giants give Cruz a chance. The NFL, though, is not a sentimental place. In NFL years, it has been a lifetime — the 2013 season, to be exact — since Cruz was a great player.
Patellar tendon and calf injuries robbed Cruz of much of the quickness that made him special. He caught 39 passes for the Giants in 2016, and voiced frustration over his limited role. The Giants let him go, he signed with the Chicago Bears before the 2017 season, couldn’t make the team and got no offers during the year.
Cruz is 31 now, and as mentioned already a long time removed from being a star. Or, really, even a good NFL receiver. He may want to come back, but his production, age, injury history and inability to get a job a year ago indicate his NFL career is likely done.
Vote in the poll and let us know if you would like to see the Giants give Cruz an opportunity.
