New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur didn’t exactly douse the rampant Odell Beckham Jr. trade speculation on Tuesday. Instead, speaking at the NFL owners meetings, he pretty much supplied both the gasoline and the match.
Asked about Beckham, Shurmur said “He’s on our team right now.”
Shurmur also said this:
“As ownership has talked about, we were 3-13 a year ago and we’re making changes to the roster to improve ourselves and this is the time of the year to do it.”
That doesn’t mean Beckham is gone. That also, though, is anything but Shurmur closing the door on the idea of moving on without Beckham.
It does mean that I think ESPN’s Field Yates is absolutely on target with this tweet:
Whether they trade Odell Beckham, Jr. or not, the Giants sure sound like a team that is open for business. https://t.co/tdnW3BTyx5— Field Yates (@FieldYates) March 27, 2018
The Giants have already executed two trades this offseason, bringing in linebacker Alec Ogletree and jettisoning defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. The belief for a while has been that they are open to moving the No. 2 pick for the right price. Co-owner John Mara said Sunday that the Giants might not be actively shopping Beckham, but “you always listen.”
Signals or not, I still have a hard time believing the Giants would trade Beckham this offseason without giving the Beckham-Shurmur-Gettleman dynamic a chance to work. Unless the relationship somehow becomes so contentious that it obviously isn’t going to work, or a team gives the Giants an outrageous offer that would be foolish to refuse, I can’t see the Giants making a Beckham trade now.
Here are some further Shurmur remarks on Beckham.
More Shurmur on Odell:
Pat Shurmur said his understanding is that Odell will be in attendance when the offseason program begins in April.— Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 27, 2018
Pat Shurmur in Odell Beckham’s recovery from ankle surgery: “All indications are he’ll be back healthy by the time we’re ready to start playing in September.”— Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoSNY) March 27, 2018
James Bettcher’s defense ...
Defensive scheme fits, per Shurmur: Olivier Vernon is an OLB in the base defense, Dalvin Tomlinson is viewed as interior lineman.— Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 27, 2018
Shurmur confirmed that wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who had ankle surgery last season, cannot yet pass an NFL physical.
Giants WR Brandon Marshall has been working at the team facility, "trying to get healthy," Pat Shurmur said. He hasn't passed a physical yet. As for his place on the team, Shurmur said "We'll have to see."— Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoSNY) March 27, 2018
Shurmur’s thoughts on Davis Webb will once again stir up the “he should have played some last season” chatter.
Shurmur spoke highly of Webb, but added: "The unfortunate thing for me is there’s just not a lot of him playing football in a Giants helmet, which would have been a good thing for me moving forward." pic.twitter.com/pr2GF7OEYw— Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 27, 2018
On the quarterbacks in the draft class ...
Does Pat Shurmur see a generational quarterback in this draft?— Paul Schwartz (@NYPost_Schwartz) March 27, 2018
"Time will tell but these are all very talented guys, they have a chance to really, really good players.''
On Bradley Chubb ...
Pat Shurmur pretty funny on NC State DE Bradley Chubb, said "I watched him sack my son a year ago in a Bowl game." Joked he'd always see SEC D-linemen "sacking my kid" and would text Kyle (Vandy QB): "Just saw ya on tape." Ha. But doesn't hold it against Chubb #Giants— Pat Leonard (@PLeonardNYDN) March 27, 2018
