Ross Cockrell will not be returning to the New York Giants. The cornerback parlayed an unexpectedly productive 2017 season with the Giants into a multi-year free agent deal with the Carolina Panthers.
The Giants have obviously been anticipating the loss of Cockrell. Since free agency began, they have signed cornerbacks Curtis Riley, Teddy Williams and B.W. Webb. None of those players, however, approach the pedigree of Cockrell or Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who the Giants cut ties with earlier this month.
The Giants have Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple at corner, and even with the trio of signings can’t really be sure what else they have. The 2018 NFL Draft, which is supposed to have depth at the cornerback position, could be the place where the Giants look to address this apparent weakness.
