The Honey Badger dream is dead. Tyrann Mathieu will not join the New York Giants, instead having signed with the Houston Texans for one year and $7 million.

Released by the Arizona Cardinals, Mathieu was immediately connected to the Giants because of their need in the secondary and the presence of former Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher in that role with the Giants.

New Giants linebacker Alec Ogletree had tried to recruit Mathieu, and former Arizona teammate and now Giants linebacker Kareem Martin had also expressed hope that Mathieu would come to New York.

It isn’t, however, to be.

After cutting Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and with Ross Cockrell still a free agent, the Giants do have a need in the secondary. Cap space is, however, an issue. After pro-rating Ogletree’s $7 million signing bonus to lower his 2018 cap hit from $10 million to $4.75 million Over The Cap lists the Giants with $5.225 million in cap space. They will have to make further adjustments as that won’t even be enough to sign their rookie class after the 2018 NFL Draft.
