Earlier on Tuesday, we referenced former Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula as a possibility for that same job with the New York Giants. Now, that is apparently about to become reality.

Per Ralph Vacchiano, Shula will also function as quarterbacks coach.

Here is what I wrote earlier about Shula:

The connection between Shula and the Giants is via general manager Dave Gettleman. Shula was offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers from 2013-17, during Gettelman’s tenure as GM there. He was let go in a coaching staff shakeup this offseason. Shula was head coach at Alabama from 2003-2006, was offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996-1999 and has also been an assistant coach for the Dolphins, Bears and Jaguars.

Panthers’ fans are not offering good reviews on Shula’s time in Carolina. During Shula’s time with the Panthers they were middle of the pack offensively most years. The 2015 Super Bowl team, though, led the league in points scored.

When the Panthers fired Shula last month, 94 percent of Carolina fans who voted in a ‘Cat Scratch Reader’ poll agreed with the decision.

Shula, obviously, was not the first choice of Giants coach Pat Shurmur. By all accounts, he wanted Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski, but Minnesota blocked the Giants from interviewing him.

Shula, 52, called plays in Carolina for the past five seasons. He won’t do that with the Giants, where Shurmur has already said he will handle that role, but will nonetheless fill a key role on Shurmur’s Giants’ coaching staff.
