2018 NFC playoff picture: Giants eliminated from NFC East race

Amazingly, there is still a flicker of playoff hope for the once 1-7 Giants

The Dallas Cowboys’ 29-23 overtime victory Sunday over the Philadelphia Eagles provided a bit of bad news on an otherwise fantastic day for the New York Giants.

The victory by Dallas means the Giants can no longer win the NFC East. Even if they finish at 8-8, which would mean splitting the season series with the Cowboys, Dallas holds the tiebreaker advantage. Dallas is 4-1 in the division with only the Giants left as an NFC East opponent, while the Giants are just 1-4.

“Somebody will do the math,” said Giants coach Pat Shurmur after the team’s 40-16 victory over the Washington Redskins.

Well, that math says the Giants are currently 5-8 and the 12th seed in the NFC. Mathematically, they do still have a chance at an NFC wild-card berth. There are, however, seven teams in front of them.

The Giants would now select ninth if the 2019 NFL Draft were held today.
