Giants will face Mark Sanchez
Washington Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy suffered a season-ending fractured fibula Monday night in a 28-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. McCoy was replacing Alex Smith, who suffered his own broken fibula and tibia in a gruesome Week 11 injury.
That means when the Giants travel to Maryland to face the Redskins on Sunday the quarterback will be former Jet, Eagle and Cowboy Mark Sanchez. Signed by Washington on Nov. 19, Sanchez went 13-of-21 for 100 yards with an interception on Monday night.
Shurmur: Giants executed poorly on onside kick
The Giants’ failure on Sunday to recover an onside kick has led to criticism of Odell Beckham Jr. for what looked like a lack of effort. It has led to criticism of Curtis Riley for missing a block. After watching the film, here is coach Pat Shurmur’s assessment:
“I think we just didn’t execute that very well. We would have liked to have seen better blocking in the front line, which would have created more separation for the back line,” Shurmur said. “I think maybe Odell sort of misjudged the pace of the kick, which kind of put him a little bit behind it, and then he tried to do, based on what I saw, what you would do to the kick if it was closer to the sideline, bat it out of bounds. In my mind, we just executed that play poorly.”
Saquon credits Elijhaa Penny
As the Giants have committed increasingly to running the football, the snap totals for fullback Elijhaa Penny have increased. He has played 16, 11, and 15 snaps the past three games, his highest totals of the year.
“He’s awesome. He’s been a tremendous help not just only for me, he was a running back in the past, so when he’s in there he sees things just like a running back and he played lights out,” Barkley said. “He plays very hard, he’s physical and he’s showed he can do a little something with the ball in his hands also too. He’s been a big help for us in these last couple of games.”
