2019 NFL Draft order: Giants hold ninth overall pick after fifth victory

The Giants pick up a win, but slide in the draft order

NFL: New York Giants at Washington Redskins Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants won a game they were supposed to win on Sunday in their second matchup against the Washington Redskins.

However, nobody saw their win coming in such a spectacular fashion.

But as we have come to expect, with a win comes a drop in draft position. After winning four of their last five games, the Giants have plummeted from the first overall pick down to ninth overall. This draft position will be incredibly fluid, however.

Right now there are three teams tied with 3-10 records, four teams with 4-9 records, four teams with 5-8 records (of which the Giants are one), and two teams with 5-7-1 records.

Current draft order

  1. San Francisco 49ers (3-10, 0.527)
  2. Arizona Cardinals (3-10, 0.527)
  3. Oakland Raiders (3-10, 0.565)
  4. Atlanta Falcons (4-9, 0.493)
  5. New York Jets (4-9, 0.505)
  6. Buffalo Bills (4-9, 0.531)
  7. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-9, 0.546)
  8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-8, 0.500)
  9. New York Giants (5-8, 0.505)
  10. Detroit Lions (5-8, 0.507)
  11. Cincinnati Bengals (5-8, 0.529)
  12. Green Bay Packers (5-7-1, 0.483)
  13. Cleveland Browns (5-7-1, 0.519)

Draft options

The quarterback question remains, particularly after Kyle Lauletta’s regrettable debut in the fourth quarter of the Giants’ win. As of now, it seems likely that Ohio State red-shirt QB Dwyane Haskins will capitalize on a fantastic season (particularly the stretch run at the end of the season) and declare for the 2019 NFL draft. If he declares, he will likely be the unanimous QB-1, and in consideration to be the first player drafted.

Haskins himself said during the Heisman Trophy media session that he would like to be the Giants’ next franchise quarterback. But, that seems like an unlikely outcome at the moment. Given the needs of the teams at the top of the draft, a trade at the top of the draft is likely. However, the Giants lack the resources to execute such a trade.

Instead, based on the board and the fact that their defense is in dire need of talent at several positions, it seems like a good idea for Giants’ fans to become well-acquainted with the top 10 or 12 defensive players in the upcoming draft. There is a very good chance you will be watching a future Giant.
