Odell Beckham not sure what to think of his comeback season

By normal standards, Odell Beckham Jr. has had an excellent statistical season a year after playing only five games due to a fractured ankle. By his own other-worldly standards, though, the New York Giants star and highest-aid NFL wide receiver isn’t sure what to make of his year to date.

“Not to say I feel like I’m having a bad year, I just don’t feel like I’ve done as much as I can,” Beckham said on Thursday.

Let’s look at his numbers.

• Beckham is on pace for 107 receptions, which would surpass his previous career high (101).
• He is on pace for 1,479 receiving yards, which would again be a career high (1,450).
• He is averaging 92.5 receiving yards per game, third-best in his career.
• Beckham is catching 64.3 percent of passes thrown his way, second-best of his career (70 percent, 2014).
• Beckham’s yards per catch average of 13.7 is third-best of his career, and his highest since 2015.

Yet, he is on pace for only 7.2 touchdowns, which would mark the first full season of his career in which he did not reach double-digit touchdowns. His longest catch of the season (51 yards) pales in comparison to the 80, 87 and 75-yard plays he had in his first three seasons.

“I don’t feel like it’s quite there. Each year I come in, 1,000 yards is a minimum. I don’t look at it like, oh, I need to get 1,000 yards. My season starts after 1,000 yards. Trying to see how many yards I can get after 1,000. Ten touchdowns minimum. That’s just the goal,” Beckham said.

“My numbers are still my numbers. I guess that’s where my mindset is different than everybody else. I expect way higher of myself. I’m trying to reach 2,000 yards. I’m trying to go for 20 touchdowns, 100 receptions is tatted on me. Those are goals that hopefully in my career, in my future along with championships, winning, because numbers really don’t mean anything without winning.”

Beckham and the Giants offense have been on the upswing in recent weeks. The Giants have averaged 29.0 points per game the past three weeks. Beckham has 17 receptions for 232 yards (17.8 per catch) and three TDs during that span.

“I think we just started to put it all together. Unfortunately, it was during the time that it was. It was a little later in the season, but we all put it together now,” Beckham said. “There’s definitely something there. We just got to continue to grow it and develop it.”

In a lost year in the standings, perhaps the offensive progress the Giants have shown recently will be something to feel good about. If, of course, it continues.
