New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur said Friday that “I feel much more prepared to do this than the first time around.” That first time as a head coach was a two-year stint with the Cleveland Browns during which his teams went 9-23.
Giants’ co-owner John Mara referred to Shurmur Friday as “the right coach at the right time for this franchise.”
Here is what some who have worked with or played for Shurmur think:
Giants tight end Rhett Ellison ...
“Coach Shurmur is a great leader that will always put his players in the best position to win. More importantly, he is a great person that cares about his guys on and off the field.”
Former St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson ...
“Pat Shurmur is a man and coach that truly understands football and can create a complex offensive strategy, while also motivating men to get the best out of them. When he came to St. Louis in 2009, I had one of my best seasons, rushing for more than 1,400 yards and being named to my second Pro Bowl. I believe the New York Giants have made a great decision for their future.”
Minnesota Vikings QB Case Keenum ...
“I’m happy for Coach Shurmur and I know he’s going to do great. I enjoyed being with him this season, and learned a lot from him. He’s as good a person as he is a coach, and that’s saying something. His positive energy carries over to the whole team and he carries himself with confidence because he knows he’s prepared. I appreciate everything he did for me and for our team this past season. I know he will do well in New York and I look forward to seeing him down the road.”
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid ...
“Pat is a tremendous coach and an even better person. He has a dynamic football mind and has done an outstanding job of developing his players and coaches over the years. He’s creative, and a real leader of men. The Giants organization and their fans are getting a great CEO for their football team.”
Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas ...
“I enjoyed playing for him. He did a really good job relating to the players. Things obviously didn’t go the way we wanted while he was here in Cleveland, but I’m happy to see him get another opportunity. He had success at all of his stops after the Browns and I believe he will have success with the Giants.”
Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer ...
“Pat did a great job. I’m happy for him and his family. It’s another great opportunity. I think he’s going to get an opportunity to work with Dave Gettleman, who is a really good football guy. We thanked him yesterday for the success that he’s helped us with and we hope he’s successful in the future, except when they play the Vikings.”
