Odell Beckham Jr. and the New York Giants’ 0-3 record. Those were the primary topics Eli Manning, Brandon Marshall and Jason Pierre-Paul addressed on Tuesday — aside from the spitting allegation Marshall denied. Here is what they had to say.
Manning on Mara’s unhappiness with Beckham ...
“That’s part of football. You get penalized, there’s a chance there’s going to be people that are unhappy whether it’s the owner, the head coach or other players. Can’t afford penalties.”
JPP on John Mara’s reaction to Beckham’s antics:
“He’s the owner. This is his team. Whatever he says goes. Odell is a great player. The reality is football is going to be played football, man. He is going to go out there and do his thing, but at the end of the day, that is between him and the owner.”
Manning on whether he is unhappy with Beckham’s behavior:
“No. I want him to go out there and play hard obviously. It’s part of being smart in all aspects of penalties. I don’t think unhappy is the word. Just everybody has to be a little smarter and in this situation when things are tough and we’re trying to find ways to get wins and we have to grind and we’re catching some bad breaks and things aren’t going our way, we can’t afford to make it harder on ourselves.”
Brandon Marshall on Beckham ...
“Odell’s creative and we all know that. Now I think he knows that it’s a penalty and I don’t know he’ll do that again, knowing that he’ll get flagged for that. We know the rules now and we’ll be okay.”
On Being 0-3
JPP on how the Giants can get to the playoffs ...
“One day at a time. It starts by coming in and we know we lost the game, but we got to move on from it and it starts in practice. I feel like we are going to come out and do great in practice this week. Coach McAdoo said some words to us and he really don’t have to say no words to us. You can just feel the energy, the vibe around us. Everybody is just really soaking it in and getting ready for the next game.”
Marshall, who has never been in the playoffs during his 12-year career ...
“I’ve been in this position before. It’s a long season, all kinds of things happen. Every year is different. So, I’m still happy. Obviously, it’s not the ideal situation right now, but if you’ve made it to this point, making it to the NFL, then you’re battle tested, you have a lot of mental toughness. Because this sport is hard, especially at this level with so much going on and so much on our plates. You have to be mentally tough to be able to sustain and continue to perform.”
Manning on the hole the Giants are in ...
“Our mindset is we have to get this win right here. Get our first win and go from there. So, we have a long football season left and anything is possible, but still the focus is on the next game no matter if we’re 3-0 or 1-2 or whatever. Next game is the most important one. That’s where we are right now.”
