Giants’ Unofficial Depth Chart: Quick Takeaways

Please remember, this chart is not from the coaching staff

NFL: New York Giants-Training Camp William Hauser-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants have released a first, unofficial, preseason depth chart. Let’s discuss, keeping in mind that this comes from the PR department and not the coaching staff.

Offense

Position First Team Second Team Third Team
Position First Team Second Team Third Team
LT Nate Solder Chad Wheeler
LG Will Hernandez John Greco
C Jon Halapio Evan Brown
RG Patrick Omameh Spencer Pulley
RT Ereck Flowers Chad Wheeler
TE Evan Engram Scott Simonson
TE Rhett Ellison Scott Simonson
QB Eli Manning Alex Tanney, Kyle Lauletta
WR Sterling Shepard Cody Latimer Kaelin Clay
WR Odell Beckham Jr. Russell Shepard
RB Saquon Barkley Wayne Gallman Jonathan Stewart
FB Shane Smith

Valentine’s View: Interesting, though probably meaningless, to see Jacob Huesman listed ahead of Shane Smith at fullback. Smith is a far superior blocker, while Huesman might be more versatile. That all might be moot. If the Giants are going to use Rhett Ellison in a fullback capacity, keeping a pure fullback might not happen. ... Evan Engram is listed as second-team. He and Ellison are really co-starters with vastly different jobs. ... Josh Johnson is listed as second-team quarterback and Geno Smith third. Semantics, and completely meaningless.

Defense

DL B.J. Hill Kerry Wynn
DL Damon Harrison Mario Edwards John Jenkins
DL Dalvin Tomlinson Mario Edwards
SAM Kareem Martin Connor Barwin
ILB B.J. Goodson Tae Davis
$LB Alec Ogletree Ray-Ray Armstrong
WILL Olivier Vernon Lorenzo Carter
LCB Eli Apple Donte Deayon Antonio Hamilton
RCB Janoris Jenkins B.W. Webb Michael Jordan
SS Landon Collins Michael Thomas
FS Curtis Riley Sean Chandler Kamrin Moore

Valentine’s View: Bromley is listed ahead of Robert Thomas at defensive tackle. Bromley had a nice practice on Saturday, but whenever I have been at practice Thomas has gotten more first-team reps. ... Don’t flip out about Avery Moss being listed as fourth-team. The fifth-round pick is almost certainly going to make the team. ... I wouldn’t get too fired up about the cornerback depth chart, either. Who makes the team will be determined beginning Friday night in the preseason games.

PR Kaelin Clay Odell Beckham Jr. Sterling Shepard

Valentine’s View: Aldrick Rosas is listed ahead of Mike Nugent at placekicker. Makes sense as Rosas has been withe the team all along and Nugent just signed a few days ago.
