Backup QB Competition: Geno Smith Should Be No. 2

Last chance for Smith, Josh Johnson on Thursday night

Which veteran quarterback should the New York Giants keep to be the primary backup behind Eli Manning? Should it be Geno Smith or Josh Johnson?

Giants’ coach Ben McAdoo wasn’t tipping his hand when asked about it earlier this week.

“We’re still not in a position to say who the number two is,” he said. “Thursday night we’re hoping it cleans itself up.”

Vote in the poll and let us know who you would choose. I will give you the Davis Webb option, but I believe the Giants are going to stick to their original plan of having a veteran back up Manning and allowing Webb to learn as the No. 3 with no immediate pressure.

Since Smith showed in training camp that his surgically-repaired knee was fine, I have believed the job was Smith’s to lose. Smith has played more than Johnson in the first three preseason games, a possible indication he is the front-runner.

Johnson is a career backup. He understands the role, but is 31 and hasn’t played a meaningful down since 2011.

Smith is 26, has started 30 games and played in 33 during a four-year career, and still may have some untapped upside after four turbulent seasons with the New York Jets.
