The New York Giants wore “uppers” on Tuesday, their first work of training camp in pads. Wednesday could see the Giants in full pads, though coach Ben McAdoo did not confirm that for sure.
Wednesday’s 10:55 a.m. ET practice is free and open to the public.
Position Battle Update
Lets’ briefly look at a handful of the position battles taking place in training camp.
- Wide receiver — Among the young receivers competing for a roster spot, Darius Powe appears to have jumped ahead. Powe caught several passes Tuesday, some from Eli Manning while working with the first team. Travis Rudolph continues to get opportunities as a punt returner. Kevin Snead had a rough day Tuesday, struggling to handle punts.
- Tight end — We know that Rhett Ellison and Evan Engram will be big pieces of the Giants’ offense. Right now, we don’t know much more. Will Tye, Jerell Adams, Matt LaCosse and undrafted rookie Colin Thompson are rotating pretty much equally.
- Defensive tackle — Robert Thomas has been getting first crack with the first team. Jay Bromley has gotten some first-team reps. Second-round pick Dalvin Tomlinson has worked mostly with the second unit.
- Backup cornerback — Mykkele Thompson, Donte Deayon and Michael Hunter have all had their moments. Right now, Hunter has probably been the best.
- Safety — Nat Berhe might be a player who would be consider a “bubble” guy, but he isn’t playing like it. Berhe has made a number of plays, and been in position to deliver a number of big hits — if he were allowed to.
- Backup quarterback — Geno Smith and Josh Johnson have both been up and down. Davis Webb did not get a single rep Tuesday during team periods.
